Chapters 5 & 9 (Operators Supplement)
One of the biggest challenges students face going through Primary training is the memorization of chapters 5 & 9. These chapters are located in the operators supplement and describe the limits and emergency procedures for the TH-76 Creek. In this page I am going to quickly describe how to update your operators supplement and give some tips on how to tackle the memorization.
Updating the Operators Supplement
The operators supplement you will be given will likely be out of date. Instead of re-printing new supplements every time a change is made, the Army simply supplies a list of changes. These changes will be given to you upon the receiving of your operators supplement. The changes will be listed as such:
"Page no. 5-4, Paragraph 5-11, GAS PRODUCER GAUGE, Delete: 62 Add: 60"
This simply tell you to look up the Gas Producer Gauge limits on page 5-4 and cross out (with pencil) 62 and replace it with 60.
There will be a good number of these changes to be made in both the Operators Supplement and in the Check List. Be advised, the newer changes always outrank the older changes. So where you make one change be aware that there may be a newer change to that change. This is why I advise you make your changes with a pencil.

Memorization
Memorizing chapters 5 & 9 is a daunting task to say the least. However, there are some tools and tips that can aid you in accomplishing the task:
- Flash Cards
- Flash Cards are useful for a couple reasons. 1, they tend to aid in memorization. 2, they are small and easy to carry around. Some find that writing out their own flash cards tend to aid in memorization while other (like myself) considered it more of a pain then it was worth and simply purchased 3rd party Flash Cards. - Miniature (or regular) Operators Supplement
- I'm an advocate for utilizing a miniature operators supplement. Reason being is that many Flash Cards tend to leave out bits and pieces of information that they deemed unimportant. While they could be right, every class is different and some will prefer you to know information that the flash cards left out. For this reason, I believe it is always good to memorize out of the operators supplement (or mini supplement) in addition to using Flash Cards or another study tool. - Quizlet.com
- While it is important that you cross check information on Quizlet.com with more reliable information (i.e. Official Operators Supplement), it can be very handy to use. Quizlet.com allows you to download their free app on your Android/iPhone giving you instant access (assuming you have your phone) to online flash cards over 5's & 9's, Aeromedical, Aerodynamics, Systems... you name it, it's on there. - Study Groups
- Many instructors advocate for studying in groups. This is effective because peer-pressure and competition tend to motivate individuals to learn. This can also be effective because some of your peer's may have information on a topic that you never heard from your instructor and vice-versa. However, group studying can also be a hindrance if your group is not effective in it's studying OR if you are simply a person who does better learning on their own, their own way, at their own pace. Regardless, it is always good to get a group together at least a few times throughout Primary to share tips, tricks, and information you/they would otherwise not have the privilege to hear.
